Stafford Travel Itinerary: How to Spend 2 Days in Stafford

After a morning visiting the town centre, the Stafford travel itinerary then focuses on an afternoon of gentle sightseeing in the fresh open air, with Stafford Castle and Victoria Park both on the agenda. 

The castle, which was originally built in Norman times and free to enter, extends to over 26 acres and consists of woodlands, herb garden and a visitor centre. It’s worth a trip up to the Keep for the views even though the climb up to it is a little steep. Remember to check opening times, but generally it’s open April to October with the visitor centre open Wednesday to Sunday 11am-4pm.

From the castle, you can then go onto visit Victoria Park, just a short walk from the market square. This well-maintained park boasts riverside walks, pretty flower beds a new education centre and it’s on café on site, a perfect stop for a coffee!

Once home to the Anson family since 1624, the estate was once described as "a perfect paradise”, a description that still holds up today.

Day 2 Afternoon: Canal Walk or Countryside Detour

Once you’ve explored the iconic Shugborough Estate, it’s time to make the most of your last afternoon in Stafford, but don’t try to squeeze too much into the afternoon.

If you’re staying at the Moat House in Acton Trussell, perhaps linger over a long lunch before heading out from the hotel for a slow afternoon walk exploring the nearby countryside, taking in farmland and stretches of the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal.

Alternatively, you may decide a detour viaour  Cannock Chase to Izaak Walton’s Cottage. The thatched 16th-century half-timbered cottage offers an insight into the history of fishing and the literary talent of Stafford's famous son. Remember to check opening times as times vary out of season.
